Origins
Studio: Volvox Labs
Role: GLSL development for real time data visulaization.
For the inaugural Panorama Festival in NYC Volvox Labs used projection mapping to transform the façade of The Museum of Reinvention aka The Lab building into a luminous, living portal. To encapsulate and create live input from the festival itself, generative data-driven ‘moments’, which over time created a genome of the Panorama experience, populated the canvas . TouchDesigner was used to control the entire system. Data from instagram hastags were captured using pyhton API and colorful visuals were drawn using GLSL operators within TouchDesigner.
TouchDesigner was used to create a robust cueing system for playback of 4k content throughout the festival. Acting as a hub for inputs and outputs we also used TouchDesigner to create the Genome and Weather informed generative elements of the mapping.
Within the Genome ecosystem a free flowing experience is triggered from social media data and continually collects relevant interactions. Over time and as participants interact with social media networks, we collect the information to 'grow' the visual flow of the Genome. Geolocation data was used to store the information and translated it to visual representation via the GLSL programming language.
In addition to Genome, weather data was used into the experience. Using the weather API we created a forest of generative coral flow stemming from The Lab facade. Using wind speed and temperature information the coral flow changed and reacted to the Panorama weather location.
